About

BIO

David Sait is a Brampton, Canada-based instrumentalist and composer whose work centers around the guzheng; a 21-string Chinese zither with over 2,000 years of history. Blending composition and improvisation across a wide cross-section of genres, he has developed a distinct voice on the instrument through alternative playing techniques, custom tunings, and an ever-evolving approach to sound. His music moves fluidly between meditative stillness and exploratory sonic landscapes.

Music was embedded early in David’s life. His father, a professional musician and bandleader from Liverpool, England, often brought him along to performances with his 18-piece big band. At just eight years old, David would help haul gear from musicians’ vehicles before settling in behind the drum and percussion section, absorbing the raw energy and behind-the-scenes rhythm of live performance.

More than 20 years ago, David discovered his first guzheng tucked beneath a pile of old guitar cases in an east-end music shop, a chance encounter that would shape his artistic path. He has remained devoted to the instrument ever since, pursuing what he describes as a 10,000-hour journey of exploration, discipline, and discovery.

David has performed as a solo artist and within both small and large improvising ensembles. He is especially drawn to interdisciplinary collaborations, working alongside dancers, painters, projection artists, and fellow improvising musicians to create immersive and spontaneous live experiences.

"I've listened to this album a lot in the past week, and I mean a lot, a few dozen times probably. A musician with something to tell, and in his own authentic voice"

- Free Jazz Blog

"it's a set that doesn't falter for a moment [...] for a self-produced effort it's pretty exceptional and worth a visit"

- Brian Morton (The WIRE Magazine)

"this guy is a zither prince"

- Nick Webb (UK composer)
